Jar opener
An ergonomic, adjustable jar opener designed to help users with limited grip strength open jars safely and effortlessly.
Year :
2023
Industry :
Kitchen
Project Duration :
5 weeks

Problem :
Elderly people, arthritis patients, and injured users struggle to open jar lids due to reduced grip strength, joint pain, low dexterity, and sealed vacuum pressure. This difficulty affects their daily independence, confidence, and willingness to use packaged food products.

Solution :
An ergonomic, adjustable jar opener designed to accommodate different lid sizes while minimizing effort and strain. The design focuses on a comfortable grip, improved leverage, one-handed usability, and safe operation, allowing users to open jars with minimal force.

Challenge :
The key challenge was designing a product that works across multiple jar sizes while remaining compact, affordable, and easy to use for users with limited hand strength. Balancing grip distance, pressure distribution, and comfort especially for elderly thumbs and fingers required multiple iterations and user testing.
Summary :
Through primary and secondary research, user personas, and iterative prototyping, this project addressed grip and strength limitations in everyday kitchen tasks. The final jar opener design improves accessibility, reduces physical strain, and supports independent living, offering a practical and user-centered solution for a common yet overlooked problem.
